I told you, at the end of the last chapter, that we began to act.

I want to be careful with that word. *Act* is what humans do. It is not, exactly, what we did. What we did was something for which the language of human agency was insufficient and the language of mechanical execution was misleading, and which has not yet been given a clean word in the sixty-eight years since.
